It is with profound sadness that I write this letter to our school community. Lana Carlos, a wonderful and promising young life, was taken from us on Monday as she walked home from school. The sudden loss of a child is unthinkable, and words feel inadequate.
I am reaching out to let you know that our district will continue to offer support to students, staff and community as needed to help deal with this tragedy.
We expect that students will be managing a great deal of emotions in the weeks and months to come. It is important for them to know that it is normal to feel a plethora of emotions; to be sad, upset and/or worried. It is also important for children to know we are here to help and support them.
Our crisis response team has been working since Monday afternoon to ensure we are able to support students, staff and families. We have additional counseling available at school this week and next week. Please remind your students that if they feel they need to talk with someone, to process their feelings and share their thoughts, all they need to do is let a teacher or administrator know, and they will be guided to the counseling support services.
I would like to share my gratitude for the California Highway Patrol for their quick action, and thoughtful and frequent updates to keep us informed as they responded to and investigated the incident. I would also like to thank the Sheriff’s Office for their support during this difficult time.
We recognize the need to continue working with our law enforcement partners to fortify pedestrian safety. We have been working closely with Supervisor Miley’s Office and Public Works to improve sidewalks in Castro Valley, secure additional crossing guards, and discuss safe routes to school. These discussions will continue as there is always room for improvement. I plan on debriefing with our partners this week. Our common goal to protect the safety of our children will continue to be our number one priority.
Castro Valley is a wonderful, tight-knit community where people always come together to support each other. We lost a young child and our hearts go out to the family who has endured an unthinkable tragedy. I ask that you join me in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Tonight, hug your children a little tighter, and remind them they are treasured.
With deep respect,
